Leaving home when we are young, we try to patch together those familiar and calming pathways and rethread a new way into the larger world of adulthood. The connections and support of home balance us, building strength like the tracery of a spider’s web. These three photographers, Mingli Zeng, Britney Simbana-J, Priya Kambli, all negotiate some form of detachment from home. Sometimes the break is geographic or there is a change of language and cultural norms that must be relearned or reinterpreted. For some artists, living in two places and mindsets at once can provide creative inspiration. Through photography, and in their own way, these artists search to rebuild the torn and divided self.
