This artist book by photographer Osamu James Nakagawa examines the historical experiences of Japanese Americans while confronting the deep-rooted racism that persists in American society. Two months after Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the forced incarceration of approximately 125,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans in camps, mostly located in the arid American West, many of which were built on Native American land. In 2022, on the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, Nakagawa embarked on a 24,888-mile journey to visit the sites of every incarceration camp established after the 1942 order. During this pilgrimage, Nakagawa made photographs, cyanotypes of objects found on site or rubbings made from monuments and plaques.
